An abundant supply of good quality, low cost roughage-pasture, hay, and silage-is one of the most important factors in profitable dairying and livestock production. Silage has long been an important part of the roughage feeding program because of its succulence and high nutritive value. Silage is a naturally fermented material. Bacteria bring about chemical changes which produce the acid necessary for good preservation. These bacteria must have sufficient sugar or other fermentable carbohydrate on which to act. |
