THE PARA RUBBER TREE, Hevea brasiliensis (Wild.ex. Adr. Juss.) Muell.-Arg., displays many featuresof especial botanical interest. Among these are therhythmic habit of growth and the remarkable simi-larity of the seeds of the same tree or within aclone. This similarity is so pronounced that, inbreeding experiments, it is only necessary to haveone seed from a particular tree and all the otherseeds from this tree on the ground may be distin-guished from those of other trees by comparisonwith the known seed. The markings of the seedcoat, as well as the size and shape, are distinctive.Sprecher (1915) and La Rue (1919) have measuredvariation in mature seeds and fruits in seedlingpopulations.Maas (1919) has described the flower of Hevea, and Heusser (1919) the development of the flowersand fruits. The fruit is typically a capsule withthree carpels, although fruits with two, four, fiv.e andsix carpels have been reported. Apparently no at-tempt has been made to compare the developmentalpattern of fruit, seed and embryo. The investiga-tion reported here was undertaken to provide fur-ther information regarding the developmental pat-tern of the fruit, seed and embryo, and to elucidatesome of the factors involved in the rhythmic habitof growth . |
