ABSTRACT. This chapter provides a brief retrospective on the role of Embrapa, together with its public and private partners, in the context of research on genetic improvement of eucalypts, from the initial period of structuring the work more than four decades ago to today. Due to the evolutionary adaptation of germplasms to their natural environments, the technical content is organized in three macro-regions: a) South; b) Semiarid; and c) Southeast, Center West and Mid North. For each region, the main research and development activities are presented, including pure species and hybrid compositions when relevant. Aspects of the research are presented chronologically, beginning with the introduction of the germplasms, selection of provenances and individuals, obtaining improved seeds, application of the clonal strategy, and the respective technological products generated, mainly in the form of registered cultivars. Results of silvicultural performance, technological characterization of wood and other processes commonly used in breeding are included to illustrate the peculiarities inherent in the germplasm as well as the operational features of the work carried out on diff erent materials. The germplasms discussed most comprehensively in the text are: Eucalyptus dunnii, E. benthamii, E. badjensis, E. viminalis, E. crebra, E. grandis, Corymbia maculata, E. cloeziana, E. pellita, “urograndis” eucalypt hybrids and finally, multispecies clones of eucalypts and corymbia. Other species are also mentioned, however, in a more general context. At the end of each topic, we discuss the continuity of research considering the challenges and opportunities. MenosRESUMO. A modification of the conventional batch organosolv process is proposed in a way where the solid biomass remains inside a basket, physically separated from the liquid phase, with the vapor promoting the fractionation of the biomass and the extracted compounds and fragments being washed down to the liquid phase. The modified organosolv process applied to sugarcane bagasse (SB-M) delivers a rich cellulosic solid phase that after enzymatic hydrolysis leads to a hydrolyzed with approximately 100 g L−1 of glucose. At the same enzymatic hydrolysis conditions, the conventional organosolv process (SB-C) delivers a hydrolyzed with 80 g L−1 of glucose, while the autohydrolysis process (SB-A) leads to 55 g L−1 of glucose. These different results are related to the cellulose content: SB-M (70%), SB-C (57%), e SB-A (44%), as well the reduced lignin content in the SB-M. The novelty of this study is the confirmation that it is possible to degrade lignin from sugarcane bagasse and simultaneously remove its fragments from the cellulose fibers in a batch reactor containing an internal basket. This study describes a simple and rapid protocol for the isolation of the main compo-nents of lignocellulosic biomass (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin), which may lead to the study of new catalysts for the chemical transformation of these components separately or simultaneously to the step of pretreatment. |
