What is happening in Brazil is happening all over the world: as populations increase, the consumption of wood increases also - and forest dwindle. According to the Cesar Diogo Phytogeographic Chart, in a total area of 8,215,940 sq. kms - the surface measurement allotted to Brazil at that time - there were 3,040,940 sq. kms of forests, jungle, heaths, coast-line vegetation and meadows, which, at the present rate of connumption, will be reduced by 1960 to 1,076,000 sq. kms. We must therefore proceed at once to restore our forests, if we do not want to destroy the only source of energy we possess. Among other measures, we shall have to reduce our consumption of firewwod for cooking. This may be reduced to a fifth of what it now ... |
