The construction of volume tables including and excluding bark for Eucalyptus saligna,in the iron region of Brazil,is herein investigated,with the purpose recomending procedures by whitch the construction of tables for other species of eucalpytus may continue.Three hundred and twenty five sample tress,randomly selected on plantations of the ACESITA Company-"Companhia Acos Especiais Itabira s/a-in the state of Minas Gerias,were divided in two sets:the first set of 162 trees was used for selecting the best model for predicting volume per tree,and the secondset of 163 trees was used for checking the efficienci of the best selected model.Because of the wide applicability of statistical ,methonds in forestry,of avoidance of personal bias encoutered in the fitting offree-hand curves,of the increased use of electronic computers for treevolume calculations,and because of the wide-spread avalability of ergression programs,graphic and alignment chart methods have been currentlydiscarded in favor of the least square techiques.Today's interest hasfocused on the use mathematical functions.or models,to develop volume tables.Various equations have been investigated in this study,including all possible linear models obtained with D,D2,H,H2,DH,DH2, and D2H variables,two logarithmic models,two nonlinear models,and weighted linear equations.Based on the precision of fit,as reflected in the coefficient of determination,standard error of estimating volumes of the second set of data,and vice-versa,on the basics of the correlation ratio determined for this purpose.The two sets of data were,therefore,put anda final solution of this model was used to build the cubic meter(including and excluding bark)volume tables that are presented in AppendixB.Results of the chi-square tests reveled that volumes outside and inside bark of Eucalpytus paniculata and Eucalyptus citriodora trees can beestimated within+-18 percent of accuracy,at.05 probalitty level,by thetwo derived tables.On the basic of the standart error of estimate and of the ability in predicting individual tree volumes,the unweighted and weighted combined variable equations were used in conjuction with horizontal point sampling(using the diameter obviation concept)for predicting volume per hectare.The unweighted linear model is to be used fordicting volumes per hectare of trees larger than 20 meters,while the weighted solution is to be applied for smaller trees.
