DRILOBASE is a database management system progressively built from 2000 for assessing
the taxonomical composition and the biogeographical distribution of earthworms in the South-
American sub-continent. Data inputted into the database came as well from a large bibliographical
analysis (more than 200 publications), from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the
21st century, as directly from field sampling, particularly from French Guiana, thus constituting
soon to be published new data sets. Most visited countries by earthworm taxonomists to date
were Brazil, Colombia, Equator, Argentina, and more recently, Chile. Other countries such as
Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay or Bolivia were partially studied while the major part of the Guayana
Shield, mainly Guyana and Suriname from where the earthworm fauna is almost unknown, rest
to be visited. Following the only visit by Cernosvitov in 1934, a long term field sampling program
has been carried out in French Guiana from 1992 to 2002, leaded by the Tropical Soil Ecology
Laboratory (LEST) of the French Research Institute for the Development (IRD), and species are
currently under determination and description. A first approximation underlined a possible
earthworm fauna exceeding 600 species, for a territory of only 86500 km² almost entirely covered
by tropical rain forests. Such results could shed a new light on the huge earthworm diversity of
the Amazonian bassin and the Guayana Shield. In addition, at the time of an always growing
using of computerising tools, making available dispersed data on the earthworm biodiversity
