Faixas de vegetação ao longo de corpos d?água melhoram a qualidade das águas superficiais, pois, diminuem a energia e velocidade da enxurrada, aumentando a infiltração da água no solo. Nesse sentido, essa pesquisa busca quantificar como o comprimento de rampa e cobertura vegetal atuam na dinâmica de contenção de enxurrada no bioma Pampa. Para tanto, foram instaladas parcelas, no sentido do declive de 50, 30 e 15 m de comprimento por 2 m de largura, sob duas condições: campo nativo e lavoura/pastagem. Ambas sobre Luvissolos com declividade média de 13%. Todas as parcelas receberam enxurradas simuladas de 120 l/min.-1, durante uma hora. Na rampa de 50 m em campo nativo não houve perda de água, já nas de 30 e 15 m, após homogeneização de umidade do solo, houveram 72,2 e 94,8% de perdas, respectivamente. Em área de lavoura/pastagem, as perdas de água ocorreram em todos os testes na ordem de 71,8%, 87,3% e 90,8%, nas parcelas de 50, 30 e 15m, nesta ordem. Interessante salientar que o volume da enxurrada em campo natural em rampa de 30 m foi muito similar à da rampa de 50 m em lavoura/pastagem, mesmo esta demorando o dobro do tempo para chegar à calha coletora e sendo 40% maior que àquela. Apenas a parcela de 15 m em campo nativo foi pouco menos eficiente que a da lavoura/pasto de mesmo comprimento, indicando que, mesmo sob condições naturais, a funcionalidade de faixas ciliares diminui com menor tamanho da faixa de proteção. Assim, neste trabalho observou-se que o manejo e tipo de cobertura vegetal, associados ao tamanho de rampa são determinantes na diminuição da enxurrada, refletindo diretamente na melhoria da qualidade dos recursos hídricos. Heavy bearing is a typical phenomenon on unshaded coffee (Coffea arabica L.) trees and limits both the production and retention of leaves, leading to branch dieback, and, thus, results in a strong biennial bearing pattern. The major goals of this study were to investigate the physiological mechanisms that may be associated with the leaf-to-fruit ratio (LFR), branch dieback, biennial production and the relationships between carbohydrate and mineral fluctuations and branch dieback in coffee plants. The trees were grown in north?south-oriented hedgerows under conditions of full sunlight. Leaves and plagiotropic branches from the upper and lower strata of the east- and west-facing sides of the hedgerow were examined. A strong biennial pattern of coffee production was observed over three harvests. Overall, the east face of the hedgerow produced a more sellable crop than the west face, and this was associated with more light availability for the east-facing branches. The branch growth rate was higher with an increasing LFR during 2006?2007, regardless of the canopy position, and no compensatory increase in the photosynthetic rate was found in response to a decreasing LFR. Due to a relatively low fruit yield in 2007?2008, there was no branch dieback. The extent of branch dieback increased dramatically with decreasing LFR and was probably not closely related to changes in the concentrations of carbohydrates, amino acids and minerals. The extent of branch dieback was apparently unrelated to the differences in the photosynthetic rates per unit leaf area, carbon isotope composition, or oxidative stress, as was assessed by the electrolyte leakage from the leaf tissues. We discuss these responses in terms of the relative lack of branch autonomy in coffee trees.
