Such differences may be originated from cellular and molecular adaptations to the environment. Despite the information available about gene expression of B. taurus embryos, little is known for B. indicus ones. This study aimed to compare the relative gene expression of B. taurus (Holstein) and B. indicus (Gyr) embryos produced in vivo or in vitro. For each subspecies, blastocysts produced in vivo and in vitro were used for expression analysis by Real-Time PCR of genes important for blastocyst formation. The following comparisons were performed: I) In vivo: Gyr vs. Holstein, II) In vitro: Gyr vs. Holstein, III) Gyr: in vivo vs. in vitro, and VI) Holstein: in vivo vs. in vitro. Aquaporin 3, Na/K-ATPase α1, and peroxiredoxin 1 genes were up-regulated (P < 0.05) for in vivo-produced Gyr embryos when compared to Holstein embryos, while there was no difference between breeds (P > 0.05) for in vitro-produced counterpart embryos. The Na/K-ATPase β2 and peroxiredoxin 1 genes were down-regulated (P < 0.05) for in vitro-produced Gyr embryos when compared to in vivo. No differences (P > 0.05) were found between in vitro and in vivo produced Holstein embryos. In conclusion, in vivo produced B. taurus and B. indicus blastocysts can have different expression pattern for some genes, but such differences can be attenuated in vitro, suggesting similar adaptive plasticity of the embryos to culture conditions, regardless of the subspecies. ablastocyst aBovine aTranscripts1 aPEREIRA, M.
