J. da aBiomass of three macrophytes in the Pantanal of the Mato Grosso, Brazil. c1993 aTemporal variations in the biomass of three species of aquatic macrophytes, Eichhornia crassipes, largeand small biotype; Eichhornia azurea and Ludwigia natans in baias (ponds) Acurizal and Porto de Fora, located in the Pantanal state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, were studied through a copmplete hydrological cycle during 1984 and 1985. Samples were taken monthly using the "harvest method". The results showed that the greatest amounts of biomass were present during the high water periods. The reduction in the biomass values for both biotypes of E. crassipes, E. azurea and L. natans observed during the dry season, was attributed to thermal stress from low temperatures during that period. The driffiting of E. crassipes from baia Porto de Fora into the Cuiaba river during the drawndown period also contributed to the elimination of biomass from that system. A decrease in the amount of E. azurea and L. natans during the high water period was attributed to biological and physical effects. abiomass aBrazil aPantanal aBiomassa aAquatic macrophytes aMacrofita aquatica aMato Grosso1 aESTEVES, F.
