The con- dition was characterized by a palule-like swelling with pain, an ulcerating core, hermorrha- ge, the disappearance of melanin pigment, hyperkeratosis, and the formation of craks and crusts. Loss of the affected teat has ocasionally been observed, particularly among cows suckling calves. Nematodes identified as Stephanofilaria okinawaensis Ueno and Chiba- na, 1977 were collected from small pieces of affected teats obtained by biopsy. The para- sites were frequently found in the subepidermal layer of affected teats. The lesions predo- monantly contained eosinophils but monocuclear cell infiltration was also present. In the enzootic area, chronic dermatitis of cattle caused by the same parasite was more preva- lent on the muzzle than on the teat. Its incidence on the muzzle was 66% among animals over 5 months old. Dermatitis of the teat was observed only amongst cattle with lesions on the muzzle. acattle aJapan aGado aChronic dermatitis aDematiti cronica aJapao aParasita aParasite aStephanofilaria okinawaensis1 aCHIBANA, T.1 aYAMASHIRO, E. tVeterinary Parasitologygv.3, p.41-48, 1977.
