Simulation showed that forest landscape structure and management options such as rotation lengths influenced both population sizes of Bachman's Sparrow (Aimophila aestivalis) and economic returns from timber harvest. The sparrow population size and economic income were often maximized by different managements strategies. For example, the land expectation value reached maximum when a rotation lenght was 20 years. However, when a rotation leght was shorter than 80 years, population sizes had a negative linear relationship with rotation lenghts. As the amount of mature habitat increased, sparrow population sizes increased but annual net incomes decreased. Fragmentation with small amount of mature habitat caused lower population size, but fragmentation of a large amount of mature habitat resulted in larger population size. Placement of the mature habitat within the landscapes resulted in large differences in population size. Larger stand sizes produced higher economic revenues, but the effect of stand size on population size was confounded by the amount of mature habitat. When 8% of the landscape was mature habitat, population size was maximized with 20-ha stands. The simulation results have significant implications for balancing wildlife populations and economic revenues through designing and managing forested landscapes. abiodiversity aecological economics alandscapes aBiodiversidade aEcologia aFloresta aModelo de Simulação aConservacao de especie aConservation aEcolecon aEconomia ecologica aForest aGeographical information systems aGIS aSimulation model
