R. M. de aExcretion and metabolism of malic acid produced by dark carbon fixation in roots in relation to aluminium tolerance of wheat. c1997 aThe effect of aluminium (Al) on the metabolism of malate synthesized via dark carbon fixation was investigated in Al-tolerant Shirosanjyaku (SH) and Al sensitive Chikushikomugi (CK) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) roots labeled with bicarbonate- 14C. Al (100 µ M) triggered the excretion of 14C to the bathing solution, especially in SH. Al decreased the malate concentrations in roots of both cultivares, and CK roots always had higher concentrations, regardless of Al treatment. Al elicited the excretion of malate to the solution by roots of both cultivars, but it was more preonounced in SH. Differential Al tolerance between SH and CK seems to be due to the higler ability of SH to excrete malic acid to the brhizosphere, independent of its concentration in the roots. awheat aÁcido Orgânico aAlumínio aCerrado aOrganicas acids aTolerancia1 aIKEDA, M.1 aISHIZUKA, J. tPlant nutrition: for sustainable food production and environment.
