R. aTropical and subtropical fruits genetics resources in Brazil. c1998 ap.39-62. aBrazil is one the largest countries in the world fruit production (FAO, 1994) as showed in the Table 1. This fruit crop strength is due to various factors, although research and, mainly, genetics and breeding are the most important issues. Fruit breeding is, basically, depended on genetic variability which has important role on crossing and seletion of improved materials. The continental geographic dimension of Brazil is the genetic diversity center of several fruits such a pineapple, cashew nut, passion fruit and others (Table 2). This paper has the objective to discuss about the avaialability of the genetic resources of tropical and subtropical fruits in the world, as well as to present na inventory of the national germplasm collections. agenetic resources aFruta Tropical aRecurso Genético aTropical fruits1 aPINTO, A.
