F.  aThe Acre projectban ITTO action to promote sustainable management of forests and development in the Amazon.  aRio Branco, AC: FUNTACc1999  a77 p.  aThe purpose of this publication is to inform the national and the international community of the research development achieved through Phase I of the project for the integration of development based on the sustainable use of the forest in the State of Acre, in the Brazilian Western Amazon. The project became operational after the may 1989 technical and financial cooperative agreement was signed by the International Tropical Timber Organization - ITTO, the Brazilian Government, and the State of Acre, represented by the Technology Foundation of the State of Acre - FUNTAC. The main long term objectives of this project is to encourage and promote forest-based sustainable development in the State of Acre, as part of an integrated land-use policy that could be used as a model for other parts of the Amazon as well as other regions of the world with tropical forests. The main goal is to raise the standard of living of the rural population, to guarantee the economic prosperity of the State of Acre and the wealth for the region in ways that are environmentally and economically sound.
