P. aResistance to maize weevil in quality protein maize lines and commercial corn hybrids.h[electronic resource] c1996 aQuality Protein Maize (QPM) is a new type of maize with altered protein composition, offering new prospects in human nutrition, but it is necessary to improve the genetic resitance of this maize to the stored products pest Sitophilus zeamais. Indexes of susceptibility (IS) to this curculionidae were calculated for 30 maize varietis, including QPM and commercial hybrids. Some QPM lines were found to have IS very close to the weevil-resistant control (a very hard flint endosperm maize), indicating that some QPM maize hybrids, in addition to carrying genes for enhanced protein quality, also carry genes for resistance to S. zeamais. Prospects for further development of weevil resistance in QPM are discussed. aZea mays1 aGUIMARAES, P. E. O.1 aWAQUIL, J. M.1 aFOSTER, J. E. tResistant Pest Managementgv. 8, n. 1, p. 52-54, 1996.
