Merr. cv Bragg) seeds have altered symbiotic phenotypes resulting in either non-nodulation or supernodulation. The supernodulation mutants lack the internal mechanism of outoregulation and are consequently tolerant to the inhibitory effects of nitrate on nodulate development. Increased nodulation affects the symbiotic dependency of plant and up to a certain degree may result in seed yield increases. Genetic analysis showed that all independently isolated nts mutants of cultivar Bragg were in the same complementation group, while the nodulation deficient mutants fell into two complementation groups. Supernodulation is controlled by the shoot and presently chemical analysis is focusing on the characterization of the inducible, translocated shoot-derived-inhibitor from inoculated wild-type plants. To aid the genetic description of the symbiotic process a new nomenclature system for plant symbiotic mutants (using nod and fix prefexes with arabic numerals) is proposed.
