The need for effective and cheap measures of prevention and control of the disease has led researchers in many directions. One approach particularly seems to be great significance: the study of the natural host defence mechanisms. Some of the work in this field already has practical application: the use of diets leading to pH conditions in the gastro-intestinal tract lethal to Escherichia coli, and genetic selection of pigs resistant to the attachment of some pathogenic strains of this bacteria to the intestinal tract. In this dissertation, three subjects related to innate immunity of pigs to E. coli infection are analyzed: 1- genetic factors; 2- gastro-intestinal motility; 3- pH of the gastro-intestinal tract. In reviewing these mechanisms, there are many areas of potencial importance in the control of the disease, and some research effort should be made to try to get further results with possible practical application in the prevention and control of swine colibacillosis. aswine aColibacilose aSuĂno aColibacillosis aDoenca enterica aEnteric diseases
