Our aim is to review and summarize the lessons which agricultural economists might learn from the 150 models, or so, that have been developed by operations research analysts to rank R &D priorities in business management applications. Chapter 3 investigates criteria used by agricultural economists to rank research priorities in agriculture. Definitions and classifications of agricultural research are also given in that chapter, in order to illustrate the diversity of activities that are considered in the context of agricultural research. Chapter 4 discusses the incorporation of risk in decision making models at the level of individual decison makers. Chapter 5 reports conslusions of the empirical results of the application of such models. Risk is then introduced as a criterion to rank research priorities in agriculture. Methods to measure the risk of non-adoption by farmers of the results of research projects are presented in chapter 6 and empirical results illustrating these methods are reported in chapter 7.
