A. aChemically treated powdered tire rubber for application in composites. c2005 aNowadays, considerable efforts have been devoted to finding new applications for ground scrap tires. In this work, the surface of powdered tire rubber has been chemically modified with H2O, H2SO4 and NaOH aqueous solutions in order to increase its adhesion in composite materials. Matrices made from powdered tire rubber have prepared by hot-press molding and characterized by mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results have shown that the best performance was obtained with matrices treated with NaOH, as it will be discussed. aH2O aH2SO2 aNaOH aThermogravimetric analysis1 aMATTOSO, L. H.
