These systems have evolved from batch files data entry to graphic interfaces, with data capture based on visual representation of the engineering artifact. Despite of the obvious gains in object representation, direct manipulation interfaces still show evidences of some critical interactive problems. These problems are apparently due to an interaction model based on the semantics of the artifact, and the communication language does not offer adequate support to the manipulation of the visual representations. In this paper we analyse some solutions within a linguistic framework, proposing a reorientation of the interaction model so as to include the tasks performed upon the artifact. aInterfaces gráficas aLinguagens visuais aModelagem aModeling aPré-processadores1 aSOUZA, C.
