R. aObservations on parathyroidectomized goats. c1957 aSerum calcium and plasma inorganic phosphorus determinations were made on kids and on pregnant goats that were thyroidectomized or thyroparathyroidectomized. In both the kid and mature goats, thyroparathyroidectomy resulted in a marked drop in the serum calcium but no marked change of the plasma inorganic phosphorus. Subjecting the kid goats to a low calcium ration resulted in a further decrease of the serum calcium. Four of the six thyroparathyroidectomized kids died from parathyroid deficiency. The pregnant goats showed tetany within a week after removal of the parathyroids. After parturition no further symptoms of parathyroid deficiency were observed. Lactation in the thyroparathyroidectomized goats was nil. aGoats aKids1 aSTOTT, G. H.1 aWALKER, C. W. tJournal of Animal Sciencegv. 16, n. 2, p. 312-317, May, 1957.
