Ecomorphology is based on the concept that in existing species morpholoogical differences may be related to the action of several environmental and biological pressures. Therefore, ecomorphological attributes of species may be indicators of their life habits or their adaptation to different habits, as reviewed by BEAUMORD (1991). Stidues on fish assemnlages have been undertaken by several authors (GATZ 1981, BARRELLA 1989, BEAUMONT 1991, WINEMILLER 1991). These studies, which were based on more than ten ecomorphological characteristics, took into account habitat, life habits and feeding and were carried out using techniques of multivariate analysis. In this paper, we focus on body-shape differences in fish related to the main feeding items found in stomach contents. The study was conducted at Baia da Onca (55 57'W, 20 02'S), a perennial lake to the floodplain of the River Aquidauana, Pantanal, State of MS. During the dry season, its horseshoe-shaped area is 10.4 ha, its maximum lenght is 1,670.0m and its maximum depth is 3.20 m. In early January (high water season), the lake and river are connected, but during the monts of April and May the lake becomes isolated. The lake is surrounded by perennial semi-deciduous vegetation and no aquatic macrophytes occur. |
