1. Semi-deciduous forest and cerradao were studied on two 1 ha plots in the Pantanal do Rio Negro (19 30'S, 56 10'W). The semi-deciduous forest had a top-storey dominated by the trees which typify this community in central Brazil and a dense undertorey of the palm Attalea phalerata. The cerradao is of the mesotrophic facies type and contains many of the chracteristics marker species of this community. It is speculated that soil differences, particularly calcium levels, probably control whether semi-deciduous forest or cerradao is present at a particular site. 2. Root systems of 17 trees belonging to different species were excavated. As a general rule the main lateral roots were confined to the upper soil layer of c. 40 cm which is not reached by the water table. 3. A study was made of forest-islanbds occurring on eathmounds surrounded by wet savanna. Such islands provide a habitat for both cerrado and forest trees since they provide patches of unflooded soil. They are associated with the activities of a number of species of termites and, more rarely, with leaf-cutter ants. |
