Conteúdo:  The size distribution within the guild of epigeic predatory beetles (Carabidae and Staphylinidae) was examined in forest monocultures of 14 tree species. Monocultures were planted in 1971/ 72; since then, particular tree species significantly affected the soil chemistry and influenced the composition and diversity of litter and soil fauna. Beetles were sampled by pitfall traps in spring and autumn 2004. Altogether 14728 individuals were collected in two seasons, including 64 species of Carabidae and 97 species of Staphylinidae, most of which being strict or facultative predators. The guild of coleopteran predators demonstrates a great species richness, with small differences between plots of particular tree species. No clear relationship between body size and abundance was found. The body length ranges overlapped quite extensively (from <3 to > 11 mm in Staphylinidae, and from <4 to >19 mm in Carabide). In spring samples the most numerous were small staphylinids: in conifer monocultures the smallest size class dominated, whereas in deciduous stands the second smallest of five size classes. It resulted in higher biomass of these beetles in deciduous monocultures than in coniferous ones. Among ground beetles the medium size class dominated and no differences were found between conifer and deciduous stands.
