The behaviour of Elasmopalpus lignosellus associated to sex pheromone release was studied at 25 ± 1°C and 72 ± 2% RH, under a 14L: 10D photoperiod. Seventy per cent of the females started sex pheromone release two nights following emergence. The calling behaviour was limited to the last half of scotophase, initiating around the fifth hour and continuing until the end of the night. The mean onset of calling time changed with female age. Older females called earlier than younger afier the onset of scotophase. This change in the onset of calling was accompanied by an increase in total time calling. Older females spent more time in calling behaviour. It was observed that calling behaviour is governed by a circadian rhythrn. KEY WORDS: Insecta, calling behaviour, circadian rhythrn, photoperiod. |
