The effect of calf removal was studied in the Angus (A), Brown Swiss (S) reciprocal crossbred (AS and SA) cow herds at the Beef Reserach unit, Gainesville, Florida, from 1979 to 1982. Due to animal and management variations among years, the study was divided into three trials. The years 1979-80, 1980-81 and 1981-82 were designated Trials 1,2 and 3, respectively. Trial 3 was divided in two groups, one with standard herd management and the other where the calves were used in a creep feed-Ralgro (Zeranol) experiment. The two treatments applied in each trial were no calf removal (control) and 48-hour calf removal. In addition, 72-hour calf removal was studied in Trial 2. Pregnancy rate, calving interval and 205-day weight of calf were the traits studied. The overall means for pregnancy rate were 91, 78, 93 and 95 percent, respectivility, for Trials 1 and 2 and the crossbred cows included in the creep feed-Ralgro experiment in Trial 3. Calf removel affected (P<.035) pregnancy rate only in cows included in the creep feed-Ralgro experiment, where cows in the 48-hour calf removal group had a lower pregnancy rate (93 percent) than those in the control group (103 percent)... |
