Assessing erosion hazard is generally accepted as being a complex problem, but in East Africa it is probably much more complex than usual due to the very great variety of altitude and climate, of soils, and of farming systems found. As elsewhere, however, it is helpful to distinguish the effects of the following sets of factors. a) climate, and particulary its erosivity. b) soil, particularly its erodibility, which is related to inherent soil properties, including structural strength and rainfall acceptance, and degree and length of slope on which the soil rests. c) The cover provided by the vegetation or the crop, and the soil management. Of these factors, the last, the farming system and degree of cover provided at different times of the year, is... |
