In several experimentys to determine whether high levels of phosphate in the soil were a contributing to the occurrence of zinc deficiency in beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, var. Red Mexican) in central Washington, phosphate application had no effect on the uptake of either applied zinc or native soil zinc. More than doubling the concentration of phosphate in the plant tissue failed to produce zinc-deficiency symptoms or reduce the yield of dry matter of beans grown in greenhouse pots. In one field experiment, phosphate reduced the yield of dry beans, but this was not interpreted as an effect of phosphate on zinc nutrition. In a second field experiment, phosphate did not decrease the yield of dry beans. Phosphate application did not produce or accentuate zinc-deficiency symptoms in either field experiment. The amount of extractable phosphate in the soil was not related to the appearance of zinc-deficiency symptoms. |
