Final Report 1996-1999. |

The central aim of the project was to study the regeneration and better use of already degraded areas, to diminish the human impact on primary rain forest in Amazonia (Brazil). The basic hypothesis of all investigations within this project was that soil fauna and micro-organisms are extremely important for the maintenance of "health" (functional) nutrient cycles. The study of the soil ecosystem included structural and functional endpoints. One of the objectives was to evaluate the specific contribution of different functional soil fauna groups to the decompostion of organic matter and the resulting nutrient supply to the plants. |

Plants of the pineapple cultivars 'Smooth Cayenne', 'Pérola', 'Jupi' and 'Favo de Mel', were induced to bloom by treatment with ethefon at eight, nine and ten months after planting in May 2001 using slips of about 200 g. Treatments were evaluated based upon fruit weight without crown, ratio (TSS/acidity) and vitamin C content. The experimental design was a completely randomized blocks one with four replications and a 4 × 3 factorial scheme (genotypes × flowering forcing plant age). F and Tukey (5%) tests were applied. There was no significant interaction between genotypes and flowering forcing age treatments for fruit weight, which decreased in the order of 'Smooth Cayenne', 'Jupi', 'Pérola' and 'Favo de Mel', with statistical differences between the latter and the other three cultivars. Fruit weight was higher for flowering forcing carried out at nine and ten months after planting. Fruit pulp ratio and vitamin C content presented significant genotype × flowering forcing plant age interactions. Average ratio was higher for 'Pérola' and 'Jupi' and lower for 'Smooth Cayenne'. It increased for 'Smooth Cayenne' with increasing flowering forcing plant age, whereas for 'Pérola' it decreased until forcing at nine months after planting. Vitamin C contents were the lowest for ?Smooth Cayenne? and the highest for 'Pérola' and 'Jupi', with significant variation along the flowering forcing date and harvest periods. |
