Rations containing screened dairy manure solids (SMS), either fresh or ensiled (SMSilage), were used in feeding trials with Jersey heifers and yearling steers. The objectives were to study the longterm effects for growing dairy heifers, including growth rate, reproduction, and general health; and to determine the rate of gain, feed efficiency, general health, and carcass characteristics of steers. In the first experiment a ration containing 50% ensiled SMS, 25% chopped alfalfa hay and 25% concentrate was fed to 20 yearling heifers. A control group of 20 heifers had limited access to pasture and were supplemented with corn silage and concentrate. The heifers remained on trial until declared pregnant by rectal palpation. Mean age when placed on trial was 11.8 and 11.9 months for the control and AMSilage groups. Mean initial weight was 188 and 189 kg; final weight was 274 and 267 kg with the animals in the control group having a higher (P < .05) average daily gain. Average age at first service was 15.1 and 14.8 months for the control and SMSilage treatments; mean weight at first service was 236 and 228 kg. Average age at final service was 15.7 and 15.6 months; weight at final service was 244 and 237 kg. Average age when diagnosed pregnant was 17.3 and 17.1 months with corresponding weights of 266 and 254 kg. None of these differences were significant. Comparisons of reproductive efficiency, as measured by the number of services per conception, demonstrated that the use of SMSilage at levels up to 50% of the ration dry matter did not cause conseption problems in replacement Jersey heifers. |
