Citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC) is a newly-discovvered destructive citrus disease caused by bacterium Xylella fastidiosa. After observed firstly in the states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais of Brazil in 1987, the disease has spread into almost all the brazilian citrus production area. Since it is graft-and vector-transimissible, the disease threatens to spread into all of South, Central and North America. The only control to the disease, till now, is to prune affected branches or to remove the whole plant. There are some resistant or tolerant citrus species and rootstovks, but almost all the commercial sweet orange (C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck) varieties are susceptible to the disease. In our other work, the effect of various citrus rootstocks on the seyerity of the disease on `Pera' sweet orange was studied. In this work, CVC-affected Natal sweet orange twigs were grafted on twenty citrus rootstocks to test the influence of these rootstocks on the manifestation of CVC. All the plants began to develop CVC-symptoms on their leaves and tested positive in Dot Immunobinding Assays in three months affffter grafted. It indicate that the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa of CVC can induce typic symptoms on Natal sweet orange independently of the rootstocks used. |
