Pantaneiro horses are a product of natural selection over the last three centuries with little or no human action, being economically and socially important, they are a must for the cattle industry and for regional transportation. In the Pantanal, the large distances between farms means that the horses have to move far under high temperatures, over wet and sandy terrain. These conditions probably proveked adaptation of relevant body systems to enable the horse to perform endurance exercise. Therefore, it is important to study the exercise physiology of the Pantaneiro horses regarding its adaptability. Although currently, none of the available measurements provide and accurate assesment of performance potential, the rate of increase of lactic and acid in the blood may be an indirect indicator to evaluate exercise intensity and/or cardiovascular and metabolic capacity of horses. This study was undertaken to determine changes in blood lactate in different breeds of horses and mules during the course of a cavalcade through the Pantanal. |
