ABSTRACT - In the growing season of 1978/79, field experiments were conducted in two regions of Minas Gerais state, Lavras and Patos de Minas, with the objective of providing informations to the fertilizing recomrnendations in the corn-beans (Zea mays L.) - (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) intercrop system. The experimental design used was the randomized block according to a scheme of split plot, with four replications. The split plot treatrnents were a combination of three levels of nitrogen (0-75-150 kg/ha) with three levels of P2 05 (0-150-300 kg/ha). For the bean crop, a significant interaction between the fertilizer level and the arrangement used was found. In the experirnent conducted in Lavras, best responses were obtained for P2 O5, and in Patos de Minas, for nitrogen. The estimates of levels of fertiiizers which garantee bigger profits varied in relation to the arrangement, and the highest values were found in the arrangement where beans and corn were planted on the same line. The results show the possibility of increasing income to producers through the use of modern technologies, even in a traditional practice as that of the intercropping system. An accurate, efficient and informative statistical method for analyses of genotype × environment (G × E) interactions is a key requirement for progress in any breeding program. Thus, the objective of this study was to quantify individual variation in reaction norms using random regression models fitted through Legendre polynomials in eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) breeding. To this end, a data set with 215 eucalyptus clones of different species and hybrids evaluated in four environments for diameter at breast height (DBH) and Pilodyn penetration (PP) was used. Variance components were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood, and genetic values were predicted by best linear unbiased prediction. The best-fitted model for DBH and PP was indicated by the Akaike information criterion, and the significance of the genotype effects was tested using the likelihood ratio test. Genetic variability between eucalyptus clones and very high accuracies ( r^gg >=0.90 ) were detected for both traits. Reaction norms and eigenfunctions generated genetic insights into G × E interactions. This is the first study that quantified individual variation in reaction norms using random regression models fitted through Legendre polynomials in eucalyptus breeding and demonstrated the great potential of this technique. |
