The effect of the omission of limiting nutrients on the growth of young Etlingera elatior plants (cv. Porcelana) has been studied using the technique of the missing element. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse in a completely randomized block with eight treatments (control and omission of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S and B). In this study were evaluated plant growth, visual symptoms of deficiencies, as well as the content of macronutrient and boron in leaf, stem, and root. Individual omissions of nutrient produced symptoms of deficiency, besides promotes a reduction in plant growth, being omission more intense linked to potassium, when compared to control treatment. Levels of macronutrients (g k-1) and boron (mg kg-1) in leaves in control treatment control were 21.39, 1.72, 14.06, 11.48, 3.05, 2.29, and 28.81 linked to N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, and B, and under omission individuals of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, and B were showed the values of 14.04, 0.81, 5.40, 3.98, 0.88, 1.12, and 16.73, respectively. |

This study compared severity of angular leaf spot in common bean lines, based on the healthy and diseased leaf area, and the graded scale. We used 12 common bean lines in the dry and rainy seasons. Two contiguous experiments were conducted in each season, with and without chemical control of the pathogen. We evaluated the percentage of the healthy and diseased leaf area; severity based on a graded scale and the area under the disease progress curve; and yield. The diseased or healthy leaf area is efficient to evaluate the severity of angular leaf spot with a sample of 20 to 30 leaflets per plot. For all traits, the results of central and border areas did not differ, indicating that the evaluation of border rows is unnecessary and, finally, the severity assessment of the upper plant half can discriminate the lines more efficiently. |
