Abstract: Sustainable intensification of agriculture is crucial to deal with the challenges of feeding a growing population while promoting a rational use of environmental and economic resources. In this context, the assessment of means to engender productive synergies aiming at mitigating negative impacts is central to sustain agricultural production. We used the emergy synthesis approach to assess and compare the environmental performance of an integrated crop-livestock system (soybean and beef cattle) to a continuous crop (soybean/corn) and a continuous livestock (beef cattle) system using data from the 2017/18 crop season in Mato Grosso state, Brazil -the largest grain and beef producer in the country, which spans the ecologically diverse Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal biomes. |
