Brazil is the world's largest producer of citrus fruits and exporter of frozen concentrated orange juice. It is estimated that there are about I million hectares planted with more than 200 million citrus trees and a production of around 18 million tons of fruits. Despite the great importance reached by the citrus industry in the last decades there still are some serious, vulnerable points. Among these, probably the most significant one is the lack of a budwood certification program. Furthermore, mother trees have unknown origin and there is no control onthe traffic of propagative material. |
