The present study aimed to compare the Iberian pigs fertility in natural service (control) and artificial insemination, using cryopreserved or refrigerated semen, in order to assure their "ex situ" conservation in cryopreserved semen banks. 45 Torbiscal multiparous females were inseminated after heat detection (morning and afternoon) and nine were controlled. The insemination dose had a volume of 30 ml with a concentration of 3000 x 106-spermatozoa/ml frozen or refrigerates semen. The same male was utilised for both inseminations and other male of the same breed as control. Farrowing rates were 48%, 80% and 100% and the litter sizes were 6, 7 and 9 piglets for cryopreserved, refrigerated semen and controls, respectively. These results are very promising considering the genetic resources conservation and assisted pig reproduction. These procedures can be recommended for the preservation of endangered breeds. It is expected that additional ongoing studies by our group regarding the reproductive parameters of Iberian females may increase the fertility and prolificacy results. |
