Extensive cattle ranches cover 80% of the 138,000 km2 Brazilian Pantanal. A subtropical freshwater wetland of international importance, the future of the Pantanal's unique flora and fauna lies in the hands of the cattle ranchers. Measures to improve the efficiency and profitability of Pantanal ranching should influence the incentives for deforesting land to cultivate pastures. a partial budget approach is used in a pilot to investigate the adoption of 3 technologies for improving productivity of Pantanal cattle ranching. One nutritional and 2 managerial technologies are adopted as investments in improving the economic returns to extensive cattle ranching in the pantanal. An investment of US$91,685 yielded annual returns of greater than 4.5% over the 3 years of monitored adoption. These gains were due to an average increase in calving rate by 15.9% to 53.2% and an average decrease in the calf mortality rate by 14,9% to 11.8% overall. At density of 4 ha per animal, these technologies resulted in a net return of US$0.16 per ha-year. The internal rate of return of the package is 13%. A regional value of over US$3 milion oer yar can be reached by extrapolating this measure to the entire Pantanal. |
