A diesel injection test stand was used to test a typical farm tractor diesel fuel system using sunflower oil, #2 diesel fuel and mixtures of the two. Tests were conducted at cold and room temperatures. Fuel was recirculated until a constant temperature was obtained. Parameters measured included fuel volume delivered by the injectors, injection line pressure, filter pressure drop, Transfer pump pressure and fuel injection timing. Test results show: 1. Fuel volume delivered by the injection sustem decreased as the fuel temperature increased and as the percentage of sunflower oil in the fuel increased. 2. Seizure of the injection pump rotor shaft and head ocurred twice during cold starts with 100 percent sunflower oil as the fuel. 3. Injector line pressure increased as fuel temperature decreased and also as the percentage of sunflower oil in the fuel mixture increased. This increase in pressure may exceed the design pressure and lead to premature failure of injection pump. 4. The higher viscosity of sunflower oil fuels and colder tempeartures produced a greater pressure drop across the filter compared to diesel fuel. 5. Transfer pump pressures were higher when using high percentage sunflower oil fuels, especially at low temperatures. 6. No changes were noted in injection timing. |
