Leptospires are delicate organisms which are susceptible to adverse environmental conditions. They are sensitive to desiccation, pH changes outside the range 6.2 to 8.0, salinity contamination by other bacteria and to most disinfectants and many antibiotics (Turner 1967, Topley and Wilson 1983). The urine pH value of normal adult cattle is in the region of 7 to 8 and thus leptospires can usually survive many hours in bovine urine (Kaneko 1980, Ghergariu and others 1986). |
