Maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) and Angoumois grain moths (Sitotroga cerealella) were used to test 34 open pollinated Brazilian corn populations for resitance to these stored grain pests. The insects were placed on the corn for 7 days in a "free"-and "no-choice" experimental design. Entries named Corn Belt Comp. BAT 72, Catete Colombia Fl2, Composto Guarami STIFF-Stolck Sintetic, were the most susceptible, and entries Centralmex, Dentado Composto, Cateto Colombia, HV GEN 20, and Catete Sete Lagoas, were the most resistant to maize weevil. The control corn, an Indian hybrid, was very susceptible to maize weevil and ranked fourth resistant to Angoumois grain moth. Entries IAC Maya XII, cateto Colombia, WP 12, and Tuxpenho Grema I.P.B., were resistant to both maize weevil and Angoumois grain moth. Entries Catete Colombia Fl2 and Composto Guarami were susceptible to both insect pests. Indication of the existenceof genetic variations within populations was found. Hopefully, the continuation of this study will provide the information necessary to develop inbreds and subsequently, hybris resistant to these stored grain insect pests. |
