There is little information about fruiting habit and yield components of determinate and semi-determinate genotypes, if compared with indeterminate short-seasoned varieties (Beaver et al., 1985; Blanchet et al., 1986; Herbert and Litchfield, 1982). Two soybean varieties - Hodgson 78, indeterminate (ID), and INRA 172-16, determinate (DT) - both of Maturity Gourp I, were grown in 1987 on a well drained soil (Xerofluvens, nonacid) near Udine (North-eastern Italy). Three nitrogen fertilization treatments (NH4NO3 form) were tested: 0, 150 and 300 kg ha-1. The N-300 level was supplied at V4 stage (300-V4), whereas the N-150 level was supplied at R4 stage (150-R4). The mineral nitrogen supply at pod filling stage caused a marked increase of seed yield of indetermina-te variety, showed an early settled node number per plant, beig unable to produce new pods and to take advantage of a late nitrogen supply. A large amount of mineral nitrogen few weeks after sowing decreased seed yield in bot cultivars. |
