Anatomical and ultrastructural examinations of the pholoem-free, hairlike stalks of citrus juice vesicles show elongated parenchyma cells with plasmodesmatal frequencies that fall within the range observed for nonphotosynthetic parenchyma tissues in other species. Calculations indicate that symplastic networks less dense tha those of vesicle stalks are sufficient to transfer assimilates in other systems, depending on rates of sucrose movement. At least a portion of the influx through juice vesicle stalks could therefore theoretically maintained via plasmodesmata. Experiments using rows of juice vesicles isolated with an asociated vascular bundle demonstrate that vesicle stalks continue to transfer labeled assimilates even after cells in this strand are killed by localized freezing. |
