The studied catchments of the Posses and Salto de Cima streams (1,200 ha and 1,500 ha, respectively), situated in the municipality of Extrema / MG, contribute to the Jaguari River and the Cantareira System, which were recently affected by an unprecedented water crisis. In this work, the possible improvements of water resources in these catchments were evaluated, which has been the target of an environmental recovery program conducted by the municipal government in partnership with local producers. In this work, we evaluate feasible the results obtained in these small catchments for the recovery of water resources carried out by a municipal payment program for environmental services. Evaluations included the temporal variation of physical and chemical parameters - temperature (T), electric conductivity (EC), hydrogen ionic potential (pH), dissolved oxygen (DO) and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) - as well as a comparison of two monitored streams in relation to these water quality variables, since their catchments are at different stages in the environmental recovery process. The results point to less desirable values of EC and pH in the Posses stream (PS) in relation to the Salto de Cima stream (SC). This fact demonstrates, albeit in a preliminary way, that the initiated recovery of the environmental conditions in PS still does not reach the SC conditions, which recovery process started before that, but also started from better conditions regarding its forest coverage area. It is concluded that up to the present moment, the monitored streams are in the process of recovery, since the water quality data obtained so far do not present worrying values regarding their use for human consumption. Abstract: Bananas are a worldwide cultivated crop and one of the main agricultural activities in Brazil. The banana orchards cultivated in the region of São Paulo State are under native areas of the Atlantic Forest biome. The Atlantic Forest has suffered agricultural and urban pressure for many years. Banana crops require soil management and superficial vegetation removal in the first cycles. We conducted a study aiming to understand the impact of long-standing banana cultivation in the Atlantic forest region. Soil samples in banana plantations (EBP) and forest remnants (FR) were collected from trenches with 0- to 100-cm layers. The soil bulk density in EBP until 30-cm depth was 12.76% higher than that in FR. Quantifications of macropores and micropores in FR reached values higher than those in EBP. The results showed that carbon stocks decreased from the top to the deeper layers. Thirty years after the conversion, the FR treatment accumulated 28.23% more carbon than EBP. Considering our results, it was evident that changes in physical and chemical properties reflected the negative impacts of the banana plantations, cropped through conventional management, when converted from forest even in regard to a remnant one. These findings, showed for the first time, lead us to understand the soil management of banana plantations, following conventional agriculture systems, as a potential carbon stock reducer and a factor resulting in the loss of soil quality in the region. Additionally, our data can be used by environmentalists and government policymakers to promote environmental sustainability.
