The cupuacu tree, Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng.) Schum, is native in the terra-firme rain forest of south-east of Para, Brazil. Its big fruits (1kg-2kg fresh weight) consist of a lignified husk encasing 20-45 seeds which are surrounded by a very aromatic pulp. Nowadays the cupuacu tree can be found throughout the Amazon region on non inundated areas. The relatively high market value of the fruit pulp (2 - 4 U$$ per kg), which is used for the production of juice, ice-cream, yoghurts, and other fresh products, makes the cultivation of cupuacu-trees more attractive. Furthermore the close ralationship to the cocoa-tree (Theobroma cacao L.) give rise to the presumption that in addition to pulp production the seed of T. grandiflorum (ca. 20% of fresh weight) could be used for manufacturing chocolate-like foodstuffs. However, attempts to commercialize a type of chocolat-wares made from cupuacu-seeds failed so far, probably due to the unsatisfactory and hardly reproducible quality of the product. |
