Mango breeding studies, using intervarietal hybridization, have been improved in many countries. The low fruit set and long juvenile period affect evaluation, selection and releasing of hybrid cultivars. Additionally, the needs of large areas to evaluate the hybrid seedling are expensive to maintain. The decelopment of techniques to improve natural crossing (open pollination) and artificial crossing (hand pollination) as well management of hybrid population are needed. Although hand pollination is more difficult than open pollination, it allows a better control of progenitors and progenies. Mukherjee's technique showed a success of 1.45%. A new technique was tested and that increases fruit set to 6,0%. Recently, a new strategy has been tested to improve open pollination efficiency using a latin square experimental design method. The improved strategies can impact the future of mango breeding. |
