The Pedregal de San Ángel Ecological Reserve (REPSA) in the Southeast of Mexico City (19º
14? - 19º 25? N - 99º 08? - 99º 15? W), was originated by the eruption of the Xitle volcano more
than 2000 years ago. The area is about 232.3 ha, where there are a very high diversity of plants
and animals, and many endemisms. This protected area was created in 1983, in the campus of
the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), in order to preserve the last relict of
malpais vegetation and their extraordinary biodiversity. Unfortunately, by its neighborhood with
urban establishments there are a constant effect and pressure on their limits that put in danger
their diversity.
Nevertheless their importance, the soil fauna in the REPSA has been studied briefly, about of 30
taxa has been recorded in the area, focused mainly in Collembola. In the present study, we
present a list of the arthropods found in three sites of the REPSA, compared their composition
in relation with the degree of perturbation in each site. Three sites were selected according with
their perturbation degree given by its closer to roads and openness of vegetation: High
Greenhouse (high perturbation), Dalias?s site (medium) and Bees?s site (low perturbation). In
each site were taken one samples about 95 cm2 of soil and litter. The fauna was extracted by
Berlese funnels during three days. A total of 1567 microarthropods were collected, 446 in the
High Greenhouse, 479 at Dalias and 642 at Bees site. The dominant group in all sites was
Prostigmata, follow by Cryptostigmata and Collembola, there were differences in the species
present in each site. The site with high perturbation presented the low abundance, but more
Orders of Arthropoda were present, due to the closer to the site with the footpaths and the
neighbor of houses, that promoted the recorded of groups like ants, bugs and trips. In the site
with low perturbation was recorded the high abundance, and the second group in dominance
was Collembola, present the high diversity in this group.
Our results show the high diversity that has been found in the soil fauna of the REPSA, and the
difference in composition according with the perturbation degree.
