The Pantanal, one of the largest wetlands of the world, receives half of its flood waters from upland watersheds. Sediment delivery to the Pantanal by the Taquari River has been increasing due to climatic and hydrological variability, soil susceptibility to erosion, and land conversion for agriculture and cattle ranching. Most of the sediment load is deposited within the Pantanal, resulting in geomorphological changes and increased flooding by overbank flow from the river channel. We have measured water and sediment discharge throughout the Taquari alluvial fan over a range of discharges. The inputs of water and sediment from the uplands to the Pantanal are highly variable seasonally. Comparisons with historical data show a recent increase of sediment discharge and concentration, with practically no change in water increased sediment transport from the uplands and its deposition in the Pantanal strongly impacts the fauna, flora, fishing, navigation and cattle ranching. |
