Four cultivated pasture species pangola (Digitaria decumbens, Stent) Parana (Brachiaria mutica (Forsk.) Stapf), Faragua (Hyparrhenia rufa (Nees.) Stapf) and Guinea (Panicum maximum, Jacq.) were fertilized with three levels of N (0.200 and 400 kg/ha/year) and cut every 36, 45 and 60 days in an experiment carried out according to a split plot design. No irrigation was given and mainfall was 1514 and 449 mm in the rainy and dry season, respectively, the latter representing the 23% of the total. Yield average in t/ha/year DM was pangola 16, guinea 15, parana 14 and faragua 13 with some 23, 29, 33 and 24% respectively of their total yield being produced during the dry season. The interactions amongst species and levels of N and species and cutting intervals were significant. All except faragua increased their production linearly with the level of N and the cutting interval. Paragua yielded loss with the higher level of N or with longer intervals then with the remaining. In the wet season the yields of pangola and parana increased with cutting intervals while guinea and faragua only responded when cut up to 45 days. Guinea was the most efficient species in DM production per kg of N applied with 39.9 kg while faragua was the less one with only 20.6 kg DM/kg N applied. The level of 100 kg N/ha during the rainy season was the most efficient with 48.1 kg DM/kg N, the poorest was 200 kg N/ha in dry season with 23.4 kg DM/kg N. Yield was positively related to plant height and negatively correlated to DM percentage. Plant height is considered a possible reliable characteristic for estimating yield. The results indicate that N could be used as a governing factor to improve yields in the dry season. September was the wettest month with 365 mm and December was the driest with 0 mm.
