Soybean was introduced into Brazil at the end of the 19 thcentury, but significant commercial crop expansion only started in the 1960s, today the country is the second worldwide soybean argest grain producer. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) has always been a significant concern in this production systems, and programs for both strain selection and the identification of plant genotypes with superior symbiotic performance began in the late 1960s, and are still a major research focus. Nowadays most soils cropped with soybean have high Bradyrhizobium populations from previous inoculations, howerver, positive responses to reinoculation are reported > 10 ³ cells g-¹ of soil. A combined analysis of 30 field trials performed in the main producing areas indicated that reinoculation icreased yield by up to 28% and in average of 8%. Rates of BNF of up to 300 kg of N ha-¹ and provifin up to 94% of total plant N were observed in those experiments, allowing yilds of up to 5,900 kg ha-¹. Benefits due to the release of N to the following crop have also been observed, while starter- or post-flowering N fertilization has not resulted in increased yield, emphasizing the efficiency of the biological process. |
